Armenian Christians gather for mass at the Church of the Holy Cross on Akhtamar Island in Van, eastern Turkey, on September 19, 2010. Hundreds of Armenian Christians gathered at a historic church in eastern Turkey for the first mass there since World War I massacres and expulsions effaced them from the region. Overpowered by emotion and some holding back tears, about 1,000 Armenians came to the rocky Akdamar island -- Akhtamar in Armenian -- in Lake Van, where the Church of the Holy Cross remains as a rare legacy of their community in Turkey...
