Notes on the Barevolution Rally, March 22
At the last rally held on March 22 Raffi Hovannisian read a list of demands from the president, all admirable but unrealistic since he feels empowered and unstoppable.

President Sargsyan has already been congratulated by Russia, Europe and the U.S. on his “reelection,” and his arrogance shined last week when he claimed that the movement had only 3,000 supporters by his estimate judging only by the crowds at Liberty Square, apparently ruling out support coming from others around the country and»even the world who cannot physically be at the rallies. Essentially Raffi demands new presidential elections to be held, or else he wants to hand pick candidates for several ministries and state offices, not to mention having all those guilty of election fraud arrested, including village mayors and regional governors. It seems Raffi is stalling, but for what I don’t have the faintest idea. President Sargsyan will likely blow off these new demands as he did two days after the elections. The movement needs a catalyst in order for the movement to reach another level. I think a visit to Liberty Square from Serj Tankian would certainly be a game changer, since he was critical of the election turnout. But why hasn’t he showed already? It’s not like he can’t afford the plane ticket. And according to his web site he has no tour dates scheduled for 2013. Perhaps plans have already been made for him to come at the last minute just before inauguration day. It would certainly be interesting. It’s impossible to tell where this movement is headed, but one thing is clear–Raffi is showing no signs of giving up. Raffi's father, historian Richard Hovannisian, addressing the crowd. This Karabagh war vet is always nearby, showing his undying support. This entanglement with the police had something to do with the orange banner being wrapped around the base of the Tumanian statue. They eventually walked away. Photos by Anush Khachatryan More... |
