Turkey, 1915. The Avakian brothers have not seen each other for years, and now plan a family reunion. Aram and his wife Armineh prepare the estate for the arrival of Assadour. They ignore the warning signs from Istanbul, where the Young Turks have called for strengthening the homeland. As WWI gains momentum, the family, like other Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire, becomes subject to government persecution. The men are murdered and the women are forcibly deported. Will a love affair with a Turkish officer ensure the women’s safety?

As they near the ninth decade of their lives (Vittorio was born in 1929, Paolo in 1931), the Tavianis still know how to create relevant film, capable of touching our hearts and minds.
