Russian President Dmitry Medvedev meets with Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Serzh Sarkisian of Armenia in St. Petersburg on June 4, 2009, during the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum. The leaders of bitter ex-Soviet rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan met for rare peace talks as Russia cast itself as peacemaker in the South Caucasus after its August 2008 war with Georgia destabilized the volatile region. They called for a peaceful resolution of their dispute over the Nagorny Karabakh region.
