Orphan is the story of a young girl who gets adopted by a loving family. The concept is simple, she seems like a sweet little girl but in reality she’s an evil psychopath. The brilliance of the film is in the execution. Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) will definitely go down as a classic horror icon. A 9 year old girl committing various violent and graphic acts including burning tree houses and homicide by a hammer is not something you see in most movies. Having an evil child may be nothing new to cinema, we all know Damien from The Omen. However, Isabelle Fuhrman, at the stunning age of 12 delivers such a genuinely freaky, scary, menacing, realistic performance that it nearly sends shivers down your spine. All the characters in the film are to a certain extent, a cliché’ of a previous movie, but overall still pass as relatively original. Earlier this summer, Sam Raimi returned to his old horror roots with “Drag Me To Hell”. Half gross-out horror and half comedy, the film was ridiculously entertaining. Orphan never goes for a comedy angle, it’s a straight up horror film, and succeeds at everything it tries to be.
