Post 40th Hamazkayin Eastern U.S. Regional Meeting Convenes in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (A.W.)The 40th Regional convention of the Hamazkayin Armenian Cultural and Educational Society of Eastern United States (U.S.) took place on May 7, at the St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church of Philadelphia.

The 40th Regional convention of the Hamazkayin Armenian Cultural and Educational Society of Eastern United States (U.S.) took place on May 7.

Prior to the opening of the meeting, representatives of Hamazkayin chapters across the eastern U.S. and guests observed a moment of silence in honor of those who lost their livesservicemen and civiliansduring the latest escalation of violence in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabagh Republic/NKR) as well as in honor of all Hamazkayin members who passed away in the past year.

Hrair Baronian, member of the Hamazkayin Central Executive, addressed the meeting, paying special attention to the recent cooperation between the three Hamazkayin Regional Executives of North America (Eastern and Western U.S. and Canada), and the ArtLinks initiative they organized. Representative of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Eastern U.S. Central Committee Hovsep Avakian also addressed the meeting, praising Hamazkayins exemplary cultural work within the community. Avakian stressed the importance of all Armenian organizations supporting Artsakh in its time of need. Inspired by Avakians words, participants donated $1,500 to the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) of Eastern U.S. Artsakh emergency fund.

The meeting assessed and analyzed Hamazkayins activities over the past fiscal year and participants were given the opportunity to ask questions to the outgoing executive body. Special attention was paid to the Armenian Merry-Go-Round day care center of New Jersey, which has been a great success over the past two years.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the 2016-17 Eastern Regional Executive was elected: Arevig Caprielian (chair, New York), Ani Aghajanian (secretary, Philadelphia), Kari Ghezarian (treasurer, Philadelphia), Hasmig Aprahamian (vice chair, New Jersey), Taline Mavlian (advisor, New Jersey), Khatchig Dakarian (advisor, Chicago), and Nanore Barsoumian (advisor, Boston).
