Post Armenian ‘Sound of Music’ Delights Audience in Watertown

WATERTOWN, Mass.—As hundreds of people filed into the Watertown High School auditorium on Sat., Nov. 15, the “Sound of Music” was clearly in the air. For the first time in Boston, this beloved musical, directed by Lena Khacherian, was presented in Armenian with a young and energetic group of singers and dancers from the Bedros Atamian Theatrical Group of the Hamazkayin “Sanahin” Chapter of Montreal, Canada. The children delighted the audience with their beautiful, soft voices, while Maria, played artfully by Sonia Chatoyan, charmed the audience with her wit, charm, and humor.

A scene from the event

The Mother Superior and the other Sisters from Maria’s abbey were so adept in describing Maria’s various faults and her undeniable love of music and singing. Baroness Von Schrader, played by Sevan Taslakian, was the epitome of sophistication and snobbery as required by her role, while Captain Von Trapp, played by Haig Toutikian, found the courage to declare his love to Maria just in time to save himself from a loveless marriage to the Baroness.

The theatrical group was invited by the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) Watertown “Leola Sassouni” Chapter. The evening’s festivities continued at a private dinner for the ARS Executive Committee and the actors at the Homenetmen “Papken Suni” Armenian Club in Watertown, where delicious food and ambience were the perfect conclusion to a perfect evening.
