Hamazkayin ArtLinks Retreat to Be Held in Canada June 30-July 3

Post Hamazkayin ArtLinks Retreat to Be Held in Canada June 30-July 3

After the success of the inaugural Hamazkayin ArtLinks program in the Catskills, N.Y., the four-day retreat will be held this year in Quebec, Canada, from June 30 to July 3.

Hamazkayin ArtLinks Retreat to be Held in Canada June 30-July 3

The program, which features workshops, networking events, dance, and live music, is directed by Dr. Khatchig Mouradian. This year’s workshop leaders are Vaneh Assadourian (theatre), Talin Avakian (film), Liana Aghajanian (journalism), Dr. Kristi Rendahl (organizational development and leadership), and Mheir Karakashian (Armenian mythology). Lori Najarian will run an Armenian dance session.

Armenian university students and young professionals (ages 21-35) interested in participating in the retreat can download the application form at www.hamazkayin.com/artlinks. The number of participants will be limited in order to ensure the success of the workshops. Applications must be submitted by June 23.

This program, sponsored by the Regional Executives of Eastern USA, Western USA, and Canada, will be held at Auberge du Mont-Lanaudi?re, Saint-Gabriel-de-Brandon, Quebec, Canada.

Below are brief bios of the workshop leaders.



Vaneh Assadourian

Vaneh Assadourian is a Los Angeles based actor and director. In 2015, she earned her B.A. in both Directing and Acting from UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film, and Television. Recently, she served as the assistant director of the world premiere of SALOME at the Mack Sennett Studios in Los Angeles, and is currently teaching the acting workshop series at the Hamazkayin Cultural Center in Glendale, Calif.

Talin Avakian

Talin Avakian is a filmmaker who explores themes of identity, cultural appropriation and struggle, coming of age, and fantasy vs. reality in her work. Avakian has produced, shot, edited and directed numerous films, some of which have made their way around the festival circuit winning awards. She holds a BFA in Film/Video from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Liana Aghajanian

Liana Aghajanian is a journalist who explores the issues, people and places that remain hidden on the fringes of society. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, The Guardian, Newsweek, BBC News Magazine and Al Jazeera America. She also authors a bi-monthly column for L.A. Times Community News covering the intersection of identity, immigration and culture and occasionally runs an online magazine geared towards Armenia and its various diasporas.

Mheir Karakashian

Mheir Karakashian is a teacher and coordinator of Armenian Studies at the Sourp Hagop Armenian School in Montreal. Following his studies in Communication Arts in Lebanon, Karakashian graduated from the Film Studies program of Concordia University, specializing in Film Production. He has also co-authored three volumes of Armenian poetry.

Dr. Kristi Rendahl

Dr. Kristi Rendahl lived and worked in Armenia from 1997-2002 and visits the country regularly. She works with the Center for Victims of Torture as the organizational development advisor to ten torture treatment centers around the world. Rendahl is also an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas and Hamline University in Minnesota, and will teach at ITESO University in Guadalajara, Mexico in the summer of 2016. She writes a column for The Armenian Weekly.
